Fun Times In A New City

Me TV

So one of the first things Jim made sure we had settled before we got out here was the tv hook up.  You can bet on the first monday after we got here he had arranged for the cable guy to come out and hook us up.  Loving the wireless internet by the way.  But one of the first channels we discovered that we got here that we didn’t get in New York was Me TV.  It is basically what Nick at Nite use to be when it originally came on, and is what TV Land should be.   Our DVR has quickly filled with episodes of The Facts of Life, Different Strokes, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, One Day At A Time, The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchock Presents, Batman, Superman, and The Jack Benny Show.

Viewing History

September 11, 2001….I wake up on my day off of work.  turn on the telvision and see only one of the world trade center towers standing, and the other one come crubling down.  My cell phone alerts me to a voicemail message, I listen to it, and it is one of my best friends who goes to school downtown telling me that the planes hit the buildings and she didn’t know what to do or where to go.  I hear a loud noise in the background and the phone cuts off. The country comes together to band against this attack.

March 20, 2003…the united states invades Iraq.  One of my best friends has a brother in the Navy, and his mother is constantly nervous.  My roomates brother enlists in the army, and is deployed to the region.  The debate over the war immediatly divides the country.

February 24,2004….in the beginning of a presidential re-election campaign President George W. Bush calls for an amendment to the constitution that would outlaw gay marriage, commonly known as the Federal Marriage Amendment.  This would be the first time in our nations history an amendment would be made to the constitution that would discriminate against US citizens.  George W. Bush goes on to win the election and is in office for four more years.

August 23, 2005….Hurricane Katrina hits Florida as a category 1 storm, the storm strengthens in the Gulf of Mexico and makes land fall a few days later.  The levees in New Orleans break and flood the city, I watch the coverage on the news and immediately notice a class issue.  The director of FEMA willingly admits that he did not know there were people stranded at meeting centers around the city. George W. Bush says he’s doing a good job.

November 4, 2008…I witness  Democratic Nominee Barack Obama win the presidential election.  He becomes the first African American elected to the high office.   He promises to bring the country together, uniting us instead of dividing us.  For the first time in 8 years, I have faith in the leader of my country, and believe that when we are tested with the fates of history, he will lead us and guide us to do the right thing.

The Hazy Days Of Summer

So summer is in full swing, and apparently that means no time to blog, too busy with things to do. Jim’s “surprise” 40th 4 weeks ago now.  Fun by all, followed by a full week off for the 4th.  Places to go, things to see and casino’s to visit.  It seems that Jim and I are slowly becoming one of those people who love the casinos, or maybe the fact that they are all over the country now.  You can’t go 50 miles on the interstate without seeing signs with directions to the closest casino.  And then this past week a visit to Melissa with concert buddy Brian.   Thanks again to Landy for the free ticks.  The countdown begins, the day the men landed on the moon.
